Pedro Alfonso Ferré da Ponte (Pere Ferré) has a degree in Literature from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon (1978) and a PhD in Romance Literatures from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the New University of Lisbon (1987), where he joined in 1996. He has taught at the universities of Lisbon, Nova de Lisboa and Algarve, as well as abroad at the universities of Utrecht, Cologne and the École des Hautes Études in Paris. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of the Algarve and Honorary Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Luís Filipe Lindley Cintra/Ramón Menéndez Pidal Chair at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon.

Research Interests

He has devoted his scientific activity essentially to modern oral tradition romance, ancient romance (XV-XVI) and Spanish and Portuguese literatures. He is currently a member of the Centro de Investigação em Artes e Comunicação (University of the Algarve) and also carries out research in foreign centers, such as the ‘Instituto Seminario Menéndez Pidal’ of the Complutense University of Madrid, as an Honorary Professor of this Spanish university. As a result of this work, which began 40 years ago, he has published more than 150 titles, including books, book chapters, scientific articles, entries in dictionaries of literature and music, and reviews, in countries such as the United States, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and the Netherlands. The published works cover fields such as medieval Galician-Portuguese lyric, the theater of Gil Vicente, ancient romance (XV-XVI) and modern oral tradition, peninsular Romanticism and some incursions into contemporary Portuguese literature. Many of these studies are the result of research carried out thanks to competitive research projects (FCT; Gulbenkian Foundation; Regional Government of the Azores; Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness; Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities; etc.). Works such as Romanceiro Português da Tradição Oral Moderna, 4 tomos, Lisbon, Gulbenkian, 2000-2004 (the fifth and final volume is currently in press) and Bibliografia do Romanceiro Português da Tradição Oral Moderna, Madrid, Instituto Universitario Seminario Menéndez Pidal, Universidad Complutense, 2000, are the corollary of work to systematize and analyse the Portuguese ballad. Also under his direction, the ‘Arquivo do Romanceiro Português’ was created (both in its material and digitalized versions, see romanceiro.pt). The development of this project is currently the focus of his main research.
