Adriana Freire Nogueira writes introduction, translation, and notes for the book “Lives of Illustrious Philosophers”
Adriana Freire Nogueira, researcher at CIAC, wrote the introduction, translation, and notes for book 2 of Diogenes Laertius’ “Lives of Illustrious Philosophers”.
Diogenes Laertius was an author who lived in the third century AD. His aim was to publicise the doctrines and philosophers in all their dimensions.
This work, a first history of Greek philosophy, has been quoted throughout the ages and is still the only source of information available on many of the authors mentioned. In addition to their theories and the schools to which they belonged, it also contains the maxims attributed to the characters or the anecdotes surrounding them. From Anaximander to Menedemus, Book 2 of the “Lives of the Illustrious Philosophers” gives us a better insight into Socrates and the various pre- and post-Socratic philosophers.
