António Costa Valente honoured in the Diário de Aveiro 40th-anniversary edition

Filmmaker, professor, and researcher António Costa Valente was one of 40 figures selected by the Diário de Aveiro for the newspaper’s commemorative 40th-anniversary edition, recently published. The magazine brings together stories of personalities who have shaped the region over the past four decades.

With a life dedicated to cinema—as a director, producer, and educator—Costa Valente was highlighted for his contribution to the creation, in 1997, of the Festival de Cinema de Avanca, today known as the Encontros Internacionais de Cinema, Televisão, Vídeo e Multimédia de Avanca, and for his role in cultural and artistic development in the region.

In the published interview, he recalls his first cinematic experience at the age of 10 or 12, when he watched an Italian film during a travelling screening in Avanca—a moment that would shape his life path. Since then, he has developed a multifaceted career, including directing and producing internationally awarded films, as well as supervising numerous doctoral and master’s theses.

In addition to his role as director of the Cineclube de Avanca, Costa Valente is a university professor and integrated researcher at CIAC, and continues to teach at the University of Algarve in the fields of Communication and Arts.

The publication recognizes the enduring impact of his work and highlights the importance of his contribution in putting Avanca—and Portuguese cinema—on the international map.
