Armando Nascimento Rosa publishes play Exílio em Manaus

Armando Nascimento Rosa, a researcher at the CIAC centre at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema (ESTC) – Universidade Politécnica de Lisboa, has published his latest play, Exílio em Manaus – Breve encontro junto ao Amazonas (Exile in Manaus – A brief encounter by the Amazon), in book form. The first edition was published on a print-on-demand basis through Clube de Autores and made available on the platform.

The book launches the Ficções Cénicas (Stage Fictions) series, which aims to publish or republish the author’s dramatic works as individual volumes.

An encounter between memory and invention

Set in Manaus on 30 June 1914, the play imagines an encounter between writers António Patrício and Roberto Gomes as Europe moves towards the First World War. The story takes place during António Patrício’s time as Portuguese consul in the Brazilian city, then known as the “Paris of the Tropics”.

Between memory and invention, the work imagines an encounter that may never have taken place, but whose questions remain alive: what makes – or does not make – us human?

The book is available through Clube de Autores, where readers can also access an excerpt.
