Bruno de Carvalho Belmonte honoured in public doctoral examinations with thesis on the Iberian Romanceiro in Brazil
On 16 July 2025, Bruno de Carvalho Belmonte, researcher at CIAC – Research Centre for Arts and Communication, successfully defended his doctoral thesis entitled “Brazilian Romanceiro: Edition and Historiography”, within the PhD Programme in Heritage Studies at the University of Algarve.
The research, approved with the final classification of Very Good with Distinction and Honours, unanimously, proposes a transdisciplinary approach to the tradition of the Iberian romanceiro in Brazil, integrating elements from history, sociology, philology, and heritage studies. The study is divided into two main components: a theoretical section and an analysis of documentary testimonies that help trace the trajectory and reception of this poetic tradition in the Brazilian context.
Supervised by Mirian Tavares and Sandra Boto, the research was supported by a doctoral fellowship awarded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through CIAC, reinforcing the centre’s commitment to excellence in research and the valorisation of Lusophone cultural heritage.
Bruno Belmonte’s thesis makes a significant contribution to the historiography of the romanceiro, while also proposing new perspectives for its critical edition and study as intangible heritage.
