Bruno Grilo opens the exhibition “Democratic Sun” on 14 May

On 14 May 2026, at 6:00 pm, visual artist Bruno Grilo will open the exhibition Democratic Sun, which will be on display at the Trem–Manuel Baptista Municipal Gallery, in Faro, until 18 June. The event is supported by CIAC and the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FCHS) of the University of Algarve as institutional partners.

Bruno Grilo (b. 1993) works primarily with sculpture, installation, photography, and drawing, developing an artistic practice centred on an expanded sculptural language that articulates conceptual, contemporary, and socio-political dimensions. He completed his master’s degree at the Birmingham School of Art (UK) and earned a PhD in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto. His work has been presented in various venues, including the Coventry Biennial of Contemporary Art, the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, and the João Bailote Municipal Gallery.

Democratic Sun brings together a body of works that revolve around the figure of the sun as an ambivalent symbol of power, regulation, and exposure. Drawing from the Algarvian context, the exhibition proposes a critical reflection on the tensions between territory, identity, and political construction, where the notion of the “democratic” emerges as an ambiguous concept.

Between landscape, memory, and social critique, the works explore relationships between the human and the non-human, questioning dominant forms of cultural organisation and proposing new possibilities for connection and future development.

This event is supported by national funds through the FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., under the project «UID/04019/2025 – CIAC» DOI: 10.54499/UID/04019/2025.
