Call for Papers for the journal ROTURA is open until April 15, 2026
The call for papers is now open for ROTURA — Journal of Communication, Culture and Arts, under the theme “Film Studios in the Mediterranean.” The deadline for submission of proposals is April 15, 2026.
Film studios have been central to the history of audiovisual production since the early 20th century — from the first glasshouses to the vast complexes of Hollywood and Rome. Studios exude an aura of glamour and mystery, which has turned many of them into tourist attractions. However, in film studies, the main focus has traditionally been placed on film interpretation, on the work of directors, producers, and stars, or on audiences and exhibition sites. In scholarly works that mention film studios, they are often merged with the history of production companies, viewed primarily as tools to achieve financial goals rather than as specific places worthy of study in their own right.
While the history of the major Hollywood studios is relatively well documented, there is comparatively little research on film studios in other cities or countries. Recognizing the need to reconsider regional and transnational connections and networks, this call for papers builds on such academic contributions and invites researchers to submit works that explore the histories of film studios across the Mediterranean region (Southern Europe, North Africa, the Levant), from the early days of cinema to the present, and their interrelations.
We are particularly interested in the following topics:
- Technological changes
- Histories of individual studios
- Studios as symbols of national culture
- Transnational relations between studios
- Studio architecture and design
- The afterlife of studios as heritage sites, tourist attractions, or real estate
- Labor practices
This issue will be coordinated by Tim Bergfelder (University of Southampton, UK) and Jorge Carrega (CIAC, University of Algarve, Portugal).
