CIAC and the Visual Arts Course organize a tribute to Rui Sanches
The Visual Arts Course, in collaboration with CIAC, is organizing a tribute to Professor Rui Sanches on April 24th. Therefore, next Wednesday, between 2:30 pm and 4:00 pm, Rui Sanches will give an open lecture aimed at the entire University of Algarve community, with special emphasis on the Visual Arts area.
The conference will take place in auditorium 0.4 of the Pedagogical Complex at the Penha Campus, followed by a Port wine reception. Also on this day, at the Municipal Trem Gallery Trem – Manuel Baptista, an exhibition of his work will open at 6:00 pm. “Rui Sanches’ artworks” will be on display from April 24th until June 12th, 2024.
Rui Sanches studied at Ar.Co – Center for Art and Visual Communication, obtained his BA from Goldsmiths’ College (London, 1980), his MFA from Yale University (New Haven, 1982), and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Algarve (2017), where he was a guest professor and retired in the academic year 2022/23. In 1984, he exhibited his work for the first time at the Gallery of Modern Art of SNBA and at Galeria Diferença in Lisbon. Since then, he has held over forty solo exhibitions, including the “Rui Sanches. Retrospective” exhibition at the CAM of the F.C. Gulbenkian (2001); the “MUSEUM” exhibition at the National Museum of Ancient Art (2008); and “Espelho/Mirror” at the Berardo Collection Museum and the Torreão Nascente of the Cordoaria Nacional (2019).
He has participated in dozens of group exhibitions, both in Portugal and abroad. His work is represented in the main Portuguese public collections and in several foreign collections, including: Gulbenkian Museum; Serralves Museum; Museum Van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerp; Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo, Badajoz; EDP Foundation; Luso-American Development Foundation; Caixa Geral de Depósitos Collection; Mudas – Madeira Contemporary Art Museum; Leal Rios Foundation; Berardo Collection and António Cachola Collection. He has several works in public spaces, including the “Colunata” at the Assembly of the Republic; the Monument to Maria José Nogueira Pinto, in Lisbon; and sculptures in Santo Tirso, Alcobendas (Spain), São Pedro do Sul, and the University of Algarve. In 2008, he was awarded the AICA-Ministry of Culture Prize.
