CIAC co-organizes the 14th Annual Meeting and International Conference of AIM

On May 28, 29, and 30, the city of Faro and the University of Algarve will host the 14th Annual Meeting and International Conference of AIM – Association of Moving Image Researchers, an event held exclusively in person. The conference is the result of a partnership between AIM, CIAC – Research Centre in Arts and Communication, the School of Education and Communication (ESEC) of the University of Algarve, and NECS – European Network for Cinema and Media Studies.

The meeting will bring together more than one hundred researchers from 75 international institutions, featuring presentations and debates that cover a wide range of fields and methodologies related to the moving image. Over the course of three days, participants will deliver 91 presentations distributed across 26 panels, with representatives from countries such as Portugal, Brazil, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Mexico, and Finland.

The CIAC Film Studies research group is part of both the Local Organization and the Scientific Committee of the conference, which will feature contributions from several CIAC researchers. Among them, Jorge Carrega, António Costa Valente, and Sara Vitorino Fernandez will present the panel “The Algarve and Portuguese Cinema.” The program also includes presentations by Mirian Tavares, Patrícia Dourado, Ana Soares, Gabriela Borges, and Olivia Novoa Fernandez.

From a scientific perspective, the highlight will be the three invited keynote speakers:

  • Daniël Biltereyst, Professor at Ghent University (Belgium);
  • Patricia Pisters, Professor at the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands);
  • David Wood, UKRI Researcher at University College London (United Kingdom).

The program further includes plenary sessions, a roundtable on scientific-professional associations – with the special participation of Patricia Pisters – and several cultural and social activities, such as book releases, a film screening organized by the Faro Film Club, and a networking dinner (registration required). The virtual exhibition “The Rise of Italian Cinema in the Poster Collection of the Faro Museum,” developed within the scope of CIAC’s CURATE project, will also be presented.

This will be a particularly symbolic edition, marking the return to the University of Algarve, where the first AIM meeting and general assembly took place in May 2011. The 2025 edition thus represents a moment of reflection on the association’s journey and future challenges, with special focus on fostering the scientific community and valuing early-career researchers.

For the first time, a prize will be awarded for the best research work presented by a doctoral candidate or early-career researcher, supported by the União das Freguesias de Faro.

The conference is supported by FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology, under the project “UID/04019 – Research Centre in Arts and Communication.”
