CIAC researchers present PROPS Project results at BEING SEA-EU Conference
CIAC researchers Ana Filipa Martins and Susana Costa will participate in the BEING SEA-EU Conference, held from June 10th to 12th, with the presentation “Interaction against hate: Media literacy and the PROPS project at the University of Algarve – CIAC”.
Regarding their presentation, the researchers highlight that at the University of Algarve, media education and research, both through the offered study cycles and the activities of CIAC – Research Center of Arts and Communication, have been based on community interaction and artistic and cultural creation and production. Various projects developed in this area have fostered partnerships with regional media outlets, associations, public institutions, schools, and other national and international partners. These projects, involving researchers and students from UAlg, provide opportunities to develop citizenship skills in students, beyond the technical knowledge and skills they acquire.
They will present the PROPS – Interactive Narratives Propose Pluralistic Discourse project, a publicly funded research project aimed at analyzing and combating online hate speech, particularly in the context of video games. The project seeks to combine the study of issues related to hate speech that children and young people may encounter when playing online video games with the production of interactive narratives that align with their interests and languages, proposing alternative ways of acting and aiming to stimulate their creativity and critical thinking. Implemented in schools in the Algarve region and beyond, and involving various educational agents, this project has already produced several relevant results. On one hand, it has allowed a better understanding of the occurrence of online hate speech among young people, and on the other, their perceptions of this issue and how to combat it for a more just and diverse society.
The BEING SEA-EU Conference will take place from June 10th to 12th, 2024, in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, in the city of Valletta, Malta. It is an opportunity to present research results from various disciplines and fields and to meet researchers from across Europe working on similar thematic areas.
