CIAC researchers publish article on artistic practice and female in/visibilities

Mirian Tavares, Vice-Coordinator of CIAC, and researchers Célia Palma and Isabel Carvalho have published a process report entitled “Emerging subversion in artistic practice: female in/visibilities”. The text was published in Rotura – Journal of Communication, Culture and Arts, in its most recent issue (vol. 5, no. 2, 2025).

The article explores the impact of Digital Media Art (DMA) as a tool to foster reflection on gender norms associated with female identity, based on an analysis of the creative process resulting from an authorial project that seeks, through interdisciplinary artistic practice grounded in artivism, to highlight women’s empowerment in historical narratives. The study presents the creative process of the artistic artefact female in/visibilities 1.0, developed according to the a/r/tographic method, supported by ethnography and a qualitative methodological approach. The experimental practice involves the technological convergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in image creation and interactivity, as an artivist mediation that promotes an active relationship with the interface, allowing the audience to participate while recording perceptions identified as narrative subversion, in an attempt to promote the visibility and empowerment of female identity.
