CIAC researchers share studies on digital media at the 7th Literacy, Media and Citizenship Congress

The Research Center for Arts and Communication (CIAC) was present at the 7th Literacy, Media and Citizenship Congress, held on 27 and 28 November at the University of Coimbra. At the event, CIAC professors and researchers presented four studies that highlight both the contemporary relevance and the social impact of the research developed at the centre. The presentations addressed key themes in the study of contemporary media practices, including youth participation on digital platforms, audiovisual remixing as a literacy strategy, the challenges of disinformation, and the visual narratives of international conflicts.

Professors Olivia Novoa Fernández and Ana Filipa Martins presented the study “Storytelling and War Narratives on Instagram: The Case of Gaza”, in which they analyse the circulation of images and accounts of the conflict, highlighting the role of social networks in shaping public perceptions of war scenarios. The work emphasises social media as spaces of symbolic contestation, where visual narratives, testimonies and media framings compete to construct meanings about war and the political and human dynamics that underlie it. Professor Gabriela Borges (ESEC, CIAC) presented the study “Media Literacy and Youth: An Analysis of the Circulation of the Series Adolescência on TikTok”, co-authored with Daiana Sigiliano (Federal University of Juiz de Fora). Their research examines how young people reinterpret and recreate audiovisual narratives on the platform, revealing forms of participation and appropriation characteristic of the digital ecosystem.

CIAC’s participation also included contributions from researchers Valdemir Santos Neto and Sandra Ramos Cerqueira, whose work addressed media literacy and digital media. Researcher Valdemir Santos Neto, in co-authorship with Gabriela Borges, presented “Short-form Video Content (Edits) and Memory Literacy: Remixing Mnemonic Audiovisual Narratives on Short-video Platforms”, a study resulting from his doctoral internship at the University of the Algarve between 2023 and 2024. The work investigates how remixing practices contribute to processes of memory construction and to alternative forms of critically engaging with audiovisual culture, considering the intersection of media literacy, participatory culture and memory studies.

Disinformation about immigration was the focus of the communication presented by researcher Sandra Ramos Cerqueira, titled “Promoting Media Literacy and Combating Disinformation on Immigration: Measuring Gaps in Media Competence and Developing the Game ‘PÁTRIAS Escape’”. The study includes the creation of a gamified educational tool designed to promote critical skills and raise awareness of false or distorted narratives, developed as part of her master’s dissertation defended on 17/11/2025.

CIAC’s participation in the congress reaffirms its commitment to critical media research and to producing knowledge that contributes to a more informed, aware and resilient citizenry capable of meeting the challenges of today’s digital environment.
