CIAC researchers undertake CHANGECODE COST Action scientific mission in Slovenia
Researchers Sílvia Leiria Viegas (CIAC, University of Algarve) and Isabel Cristina Carvalho (CIAC, Universidade Aberta) will carry out, simultaneously, a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) in Slovenia, lasting 10 working days (from 22 June to 3 July 2026), representing CIAC. The host institution will be the Institute IRRIS for Research, Development and Strategies of Society, Culture and Environment. This STSM is being conducted within the framework of COST Action CA22149 – CHANGECODE (Research Network for Interdisciplinary Studies of Transhistorical Deliberative Democracy). During the mission, the researchers will have access to relevant research resources, academic collaboration opportunities, and a stimulating interdisciplinary environment aligned with the objectives of the CHANGECODE Action.
Researcher Sílvia Leiria Viegas will be involved in a collaborative research project exploring the role of space and visual communication in facilitating and transforming deliberative processes across different social and cultural contexts. Her work will focus on analysing how spatial arrangements and visual communication practices shape participation, interaction, and legitimacy in deliberative settings.
Researcher Isabel Cristina Carvalho will participate in a collaborative research project examining how digital artivism can function as a form of critical action, fostering public participation and democratic engagement in contexts marked by democratic backsliding. Her mission will include visits to leading organisations based in Ljubljana that operate at the intersection of digital art, artivism, and technopolitical practices, including the Aksioma Institute, Zavod Kersnikova, Projekt Atol, and Zavod Delak.
The researchers will join a working group, contributing to the consolidation of interdisciplinary and interinstitutional collaboration networks. During this STSM, each researcher will develop one working paper and three short stories for dissemination through the COST Action’s digital repository. They will also discuss the possibility of collaboratively preparing an application for European funding to support international research projects involving several universities and institutions.
These activities will contribute directly to the objectives of Working Group 2: Culture, Cognition and Narratives of Legitimation, strengthening interdisciplinary dialogue between communication studies, visual culture, and deliberative democracy research.
