CIAC takes part in the 3rd edition of FICUA – Algarve International University Film Festival
CIAC will be present at the 3rd edition of FICUA – Algarve International University Film Festival, taking place this Thursday, May 23, 2025, at the Paulo Freire Amphitheatre of the School of Education and Communication at the University of Algarve, on the Penha Campus. The event, with free admission, runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., featuring a program that celebrates university cinema made by and for students.
With a curatorship dedicated to first works, FICUA aims to highlight risk-taking, experimentation, and the freshness of emerging narratives in the seventh art. This year’s edition will feature the screening of 17 short films as part of the main showcase and 7 installation films, from 6 countries (Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Greece, Estonia, and Canada), representing 9 higher education institutions.
Four thematic cycles, a plural vision of student cinema
The program is organized into four distinct cycles — FEMINAE, MEMÓRIAS, DIÁLOGOS, and FICUANTASIA — which explore themes such as the representation of women in cinema, the preservation of memory, generational affections and conflicts, and the fantastic universe.
The FEMINAE cycle, with works from Greece, Spain, and Estonia, opens the event and includes the talk “WOMEN IN CINEMA”, featuring the presentation of the research project SPECULUM – Filming and Seeing Oneself in the Mirror: The Use of Self-Writing by Portuguese-Speaking Documentary Filmmakers, by CIAC researcher Ana Isabel Soares, as well as the presentation of the newly created Feminist Collective of the University of Algarve.
In the afternoon, the MEMÓRIAS cycle is followed by a roundtable entitled “Cinema in Academia”, moderated by Josué Guedes, CIAC research fellow, with the participation of five CIAC members: Mirian Tavares, deputy coordinator of the center, Jorge Carrega, António Costa Valente, João Paulo Reis, and Diogo Simão. The session seeks to reflect on the role of cinema as an artistic practice, an object of study, and a pedagogical tool in higher education.
A space of university communion around cinema
FICUA also offers moments of conviviality and entertainment, with an opening musical performance by Inês Pereira, catering throughout the day, and the presence of authors, students, and professors connected to cinema. The initiative is an open invitation to the academic community and the general public, celebrating cinema as a language of encounter and sharing.
