International Colloquium in Lisbon Discusses Marivaux’s Theatre on the Contemporary Stage
On June 30 and July 1, 2025, the international colloquium Marivaux à l’épreuve de la scène contemporaine: quel jeu d’acteur pour le théâtre de Marivaux? will take place in Lisbon and Amadora. This initiative brings together researchers, directors, and actors to reflect on the challenges of interpreting and updating Marivaux’s theatre. The event is co-organized by CIAC, in partnership with leading national and international institutions.
The colloquium is part of the international project SEM (Scènes Européennes et extra-européennes Marivaux), directed by Paola Ranzini within a research program of the Institut Universitaire de France, and is supported by the Association Portugaise d’Études Françaises (APEF) and the Institut Français du Portugal. Local organization is shared among the Centre for Theatre Studies, University of Lisbon (CET/FLUL), ACT School, CIAC/University of Algarve, and École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre (ENSATT).
The colloquium program is structured into thematic sessions and roundtables, taking place at Recreios da Amadora (June 30) and the Faculty of Arts, University of Lisbon (July 1). The event opens with stage presentations by students from ENSATT (Lyon) and ACT School (Lisbon), followed by a roundtable with theatre professionals including Michel Cerda, Sofia de Portugal, José Peixoto, and Galin Stoëv. On the second day, academic presentations will address topics such as Marivauxan acting, actor training, contemporary mise-en-scène, and the reception of Marivaux’s work in international contexts including France, Greece, Poland, Japan, and Switzerland.
The colloquium proposes, among other themes:
- Revisiting Marivaux’s conception of the actor’s performance;
- Investigating how this legacy influences the adaptation of his work in contemporary productions;
- Exploring the role of Marivaux’s theatre in actor training across different countries.
The event’s scientific committee includes specialists from several universities, such as Sorbonne Université, Université de Sherbrooke, Université de Messina, Université de Varsovie, Université de Lyon 2, among others. Among the members of the organizing committee, CIAC researcher Ana Clara Santos stands out, collaborating with Maria João Brilhante, Paola Ranzini, and Catherine Ailloud-Nicolas.
