Condolence Note on the Passing of João Maria Mendes
CIAC – Research Center for Arts and Communication mourns the passing of João Maria Mendes, one of the Center’s founders, former integrated researcher, and CIAC project coordinator, whose work led to significant publications on cinema and communication in Portugal, including the essay collection New & Old Trends in Contemporary Portuguese Cinema (2012).
Born in 1948, João Maria Mendes graduated in Philosophy from the University of Leuven (1975) and later obtained a PhD in Communication Sciences from NOVA University Lisbon. He taught in the Film Department of the Lisbon Theatre and Film School from 1987 to 2018, serving as the institution’s director between 2015 and 2018.
In addition to his academic career, he was a journalist and novelist. In 1994, he was awarded the LER/Círculo de Leitores Prize for his novel A Mulher do Terrorista (The Terrorist’s Wife).
