Cristina Cavalcanti takes part in exhibition dedicated to Women in Sport

Cristina Cavalcanti participates on the exhibition Women in Sport: Pioneering, Challenges, Inspiration, Equality, organised by the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (IPDJ), which celebrates the inspiring trajectory of women in sport, from pioneers to contemporary athletes who defy gender stereotypes.

The work INTRUSA[S], by the researcher and doctoral student in digital media art, takes a look at the gender violence suffered by women, inspired by the story of Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon in 1967. When she realised there was a woman there, the race director invaded the track and pushed her hard, trying to expel her. This kind of violence shows how the female body can be touched without consent.

The film shows a woman running through the streets of a city. But we realise that she doesn’t move. Her efforts are in vain. We see a hand trying to order her, another trying to stop her, then another trying to touch her and the last, most violent, threatening hand. At first, we see that the woman can’t run, but we don’t know why. Only then do we see the hands and realise the boycott she is suffering. The artefact is a video installation that uses videos from image banks, artificial intelligence and augmented reality.

The exhibition opened to the public on 10 October 2024 and is on display at the Jamor Interpretive Centre (Centro Interpretativo do Jamor) in Lisbon.
