Cycle of Conversations Freedom, Democracy and Citizenship: Globalisation, Solidarity and Peace
The Intersectional and Urban Studies Group — RE|DE is organising the Cycle of Talks Freedom, Democracy, and Citizenship (2024-2025). The third of six talks will take place on November 7, 4 pm (GTM +0), on the theme of Globalisation, Solidarity, and Peace. Special guests will be José Manuel Pureza (University of Coimbra) and Diego Checa Hidalgo (University of Granada). The moderator will be Antonio Baena (Universidad Loyola Andalucía). The Group and the Cycle of Conversations will be presented by Ana Silva Fernandes (CEAU-FAUP).
The Intersectional and Urban Studies Group — RE|DE, is an interdisciplinary space for academic collaboration between researchers from various Portuguese and Spanish universities, aimed at analysing and transforming the urban through the lens of intersectionality. It aims to work on and with social groups in situations of vulnerability, in both countries, and around the co-construction of a less unequal and fairer society.
The Cycle of Conversations aims to reflect on these themes in the year that marks the 50th anniversary of 25 April in Portugal and the end of the dictatorship. The talks will take place between 2024 and 2025, the same year in which is celebrated the end of the dictatorship in Spain. In this way, we start from the studies of memory to project a future by debating issues that are central to the construction of contemporary society, its challenges and opportunities. Through a cross-sectional approach, we want to explore convergent or divergent readings of Freedom, Democracy, and Citizenship in the Iberian Peninsula in the 21st century.
Conversation 3 — Globalisation, Solidarity, and Peace continues this Cycle of Conversations, focusing on international relations, conflict resolution and humanitarianism in change, on one hand, and on contemporary history, theory and practice of non-violent action, on the other. The aim is to rethink freedom, democracy, and citizenship through readings on peaceful forms of resistance, the decolonisation of practices and the transformation of the world.
