Digital Media Art PhD project leads to the creation of the photographic series Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité
The doctoral research developed by Gabriella Fontes Leite as part of the PhD in Digital Media Art, a programme offered by the University of Algarve and the Open University in partnership with CIAC, has resulted in the photographic series Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité.
The project uses photography and digital media art as tools to analyse the relationships between urban space, human rights and spatial justice, investigating how these practices can contribute to the construction of a sense of belonging within the city.
Created in Strasbourg, France, the series reflects on the differences between the universal principles of human rights and the realities experienced in the territory. Set in a city that hosts institutions such as the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights, the project explores the relationships between space, rights and housing conditions in the urban environment.
Supervised by Sílvia Leiria Viegas and Gabriela Borges, the research brings together photography, digital media art and research-creation, using images as a means of understanding and interpreting space. The photographs, produced in black and white and without identifying the faces of the people portrayed, seek to shift the focus away from individual experiences and towards the structures and contexts that shape the way urban space is experienced.
