Edgar Massul opens “emguarda” exhibition

The exhibition “emguarda”, by visual artist Edgar Massul, opens on Saturday, December 21st, at 3:30 pm at the Sagres Fortress Contemporary Art Centre.

Edgar Massul’s artistic output covers a wide range of disciplines, incorporating painting, drawing, sculpture, objects, photography, video, installations and site-specific projects. His work dialogues with art history and ancient nature — between the impermanence of organic matter and the permanence of the memory of things.

Curated by Mirian Tavares and Pedro Cabral Santo, the exhibition features drawings that centre around water, earth, and heat. There is also the series of targets, which is made using a different technique and with greater control by the artist over the result.

According to Mirian Tavares, “’emguarda’ is a word-thing created by the artist. With multiple meanings, it reveals an intention and a gesture — that of recognising that his works remain because they are kept, sheltered by collectors, collections, friends. By those who find, and admire, the beauty of the ephemeral, the poetry born of Edgar Massul’s telluric relationship with the land.”

A vernissage is planned, with the support of Quinta do Barranco Longo. The exhibition will be open until March 30th, 2025, from 9:30 to 17:30, with the last entry possible until 17:00.
