Exhibition revisits the sessions of the Cineclube de Faro during the Estado Novo
The Library of the University of Algarve, at the Gambelas Campus, will host from June 11 to June 30, 2026, the exhibition The Sessions of the Cineclube de Faro during the Estado Novo. This initiative is organized by CIAC – Research Centre in Arts and Communication and the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FCHS), with the support of the Cineclube de Faro.
Curated by Jorge Carrega, researcher and coordinator of CIAC’s Research Group on Film Studies, the exhibition proposes a reflection on the role played by the Cineclube de Faro in promoting film culture and stimulating spaces of cultural resistance during the Estado Novo dictatorship period.
The exhibition brings together a selection of 30 session programs held by the Cineclube de Faro between 1956 and 1974, documents that bear witness to the regular activity of this association in promoting national and international cinematographic works. The exhibition itinerary is complemented by around three dozen books and DVDs dedicated to the history of cinema and film club activity, helping to contextualize the cultural and social relevance of this movement.
By highlighting historical materials rarely accessible to the public, the exhibition demonstrates the importance of film clubs as spaces for cultural education, critical debate, and contact with alternative cinematographies within a context marked by censorship and restrictions imposed by the regime.
The opening will take place on June 11 at 5:00 pm. Admission is free, and the exhibition can be visited during the opening hours of the University of Algarve Library, Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 8:00 pm, and Saturday from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.
