Faro Museum keeps online exhibition “A ascensão do cinema italiano na coleção de cartazes do Museu de Faro”

With a focus on the use of emerging and interactive technologies, the Faro Municipal Museum is offering a permanent digital experience of its collection of Italian cinema posters.

Between November and December 2024, the Faro Municipal Museum offered the public the chance to see a set of Italian cinema posters from the collection of Joaquim António Viegas.

Following the conclusion of the exhibition, which brought together 11 rare posters from the period 1909 to 1915, the Faro Museum decided to maintain this collection through an online virtual exhibition produced in partnership with CIAC. As well as showing the 11 copies presented at the Museum, it includes nine others that could not be physically displayed due to space limitations and their state of conservation.

The permanent exhibition contains the history behind the poster industry and Italian cinema at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as textual and videographic information. Together with 3D models of the museum spaces, the poster images are revealed to us in an interactive and innovative way. Through this demonstration, it is also possible to see two incomplete posters that have been reinterpreted and completed using Artificial Intelligence technologies.

The virtual exhibition of Italian posters was produced by researchers Rui d’Orey and Alexandre Martins as part of a project to research and publicise the collection of Joaquim António Viegas, coordinated by CIAC researcher Jorge Carrega, CIAC vice-coordinator Bruno Mendes da Silva and Faro Museum director Marco Lopes.
