Freedom, Democracy, and Citizenship Talks Series: Mobilities, Human Rights, and Territories

The Intersectional and Urban Studies Group – RE|DE is organising the Freedom, Democracy, and Citizenship Talks Series (2024-2025). The second of six talks will take place on 19th June at 16:00 (GMT +1), focusing on Mobilities, Human Rights, and Territories. The featured speakers are Angeles Solanes Corella (University of Valencia) and Joana Pestana Lages (DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte), with moderation by Ana Miguel Regedor (CES | III – UC). Laura Serrano Mendoza (Universidad Loyola Andalucía) will introduce the Group and the Talks Series.

The Intersectional and Urban Studies Group – RE|DE is an interdisciplinary academic collaboration among researchers from various Portuguese and Spanish universities. It aims to analyse and transform urban spaces through the lens of intersectionality, working with socially vulnerable groups in both countries to co-construct a more equitable society.

This Talks Series seeks to reflect on these themes in the year marking the 50th anniversary of the April 25th Revolution in Portugal and the end of the dictatorship. The talks will take place between 2024 and 2025, also celebrating the end of the dictatorship in Spain. Using memory studies as a starting point, the series aims to project a future by debating key issues in the construction of contemporary society, its challenges, and opportunities. The organisers intend to explore, through a cross-perspective, convergent or divergent interpretations of Freedom, Democracy, and Citizenship in the 21st-century Iberian Peninsula.

Talk 2 – Mobilities, Human Rights, and Territories continues this series by focusing on human rights, racial and ethnic discrimination, and the social integration of immigrants and their descendants. It also addresses the urban expression of exclusion and housing precariousness. The aim is to rethink Freedom, Democracy, and Citizenship through perspectives on justice, space, and the right to the city.
