Gabriela Borges presents research at the Lusofonika International Seminar
CIAC researcher Gabriela Borges will participate in the Lusofonika International Seminar – Cultural circulation and peripheral pop music in Portuguese-speaking spaces, taking place on 11 and 12 November 2026 at Fluminense Federal University (UFF), in Niterói, Brazil.
On 12 November, between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, Gabriela Borges, affiliated with the University of Algarve and the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), will present the paper “Voices of the Algarve: creative processes and visibility strategies for Portuguese independent music in the digital environment”, co-authored with Daiana Sigiliano (UFJF).
The presentation is part of the panel “Diasporic Musical Trajectories and Networks”, moderated by Juliana Gutmann, and addresses the creative processes and visibility strategies of artists from the Algarve in the digital context.
Organised by UFF’s Postgraduate Programme in Communication (PPGCOM-UFF), the seminar invites reflection on the relationships between music, culture, diaspora and postcolonial legacies. With a particular focus on peripheral pop music and digital culture, the event explores the circulation of musical genres, sounds, images and narratives across territories, and their role in reshaping identities and senses of belonging in Portuguese-speaking spaces.
The event presents findings from the international project “Portuguese-speaking peripheral pop music networks: genres, formats, performances and narratives in circulation within the digital ecosystem”, coordinated by Simone Pereira de Sá, in which Gabriela Borges participates. The project brings together researchers from Brazilian and Portuguese institutions, including the University of Algarve, the University of Porto and NOVA University Lisbon, and receives funding through CNPq’s Universal Call (2024) and Faperj’s Cientista do Nosso Estado programme (2025).
Over the two days, the programme includes an opening lecture on the thirtieth anniversary of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and four panels dedicated to cultures and belonging in Portugal, musical connections between Brazil and Africa, diasporic musical trajectories, and the sounds and audiovisual forms of Portuguese-speaking peripheral pop music.
The seminar will take place in the Postgraduate Auditorium at Novo IACS – UFF’s Institute of Arts and Social Communication, on the Gragoatá Campus. Admission is free, on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to the auditorium’s capacity.
