Hugo Paquete’s “NEGENTROPIA” will once again be presented in Porto

Hugo Paquete, a researcher at CIAC, is once again presenting NEGENTROPIA — The Last Man in the Wasteland, this time at Galeria Dínamo in Porto, on 18th October 2024.

NEGENTROPIA: The Last Man in the Wasteland is a post-techno operatic experience in a post-apocalyptic universe, an opera that transcends traditional conventions, mixing electronic music, noise and technological interaction.

Between a post-apocalyptic and dystopian universe, where the last man seeks a revelation in his last days, in an extravagant attempt to survive in a desolate and fragmented land. NEGENTROPIA, directed and conceived by Hugo Paquete, offers a dense sensory experience, inspired by the compositions of Jani Christou, taking them to unique sonic and visual heights.

Presented at the Porto Planetarium in a site-specific format, the piece uses 3D videos by Julius Horsthuis and eight-channel spatialised sound, creating an audiovisual immersion that transports the audience to a world of rhythm and noise. On stage, baritone Rui Baeta embodies ‘the last man’, accompanied by electronic manipulations by Hugo Paquete and guest musicians such as Pedro Carvalho and Ianina Khmelik.

The work explores themes such as radical ecology, astronomy, mysticism and the human condition in the face of the apocalyptic, offering a disruptive fusion of theatre, music, and technology. The performers, Bruno Sousa and Amanda Duda, are noise generators, evoking memories of a lost humanity, while the narrative takes us on a cathartic ritual, where myth and ritual operate as a response to the collapse of civilization.

This show is funded by the Directorate-General for the Arts (DGArtes) and the Portuguese Republic / Culture, and has the support of various organisations, including CIAC — Research Center for Arts and Communication. Admission is free.
