João Bailote Gallery in Albufeira hosts Júlio Antão’s exhibition A.R.T.E.

The João Bailote Municipal Gallery, in Albufeira, is hosting until 6 September the exhibition A.R.T.E. by visual artist Júlio Antão, a native of Albufeira. The exhibition was inaugurated on 9 August and is curated by Professor António Costa Valente, a faculty member at the University of Algarve (UAlg) and a researcher at CIAC.

Recently awarded first prize at the Biennial Cores e Formas dos Nossos Artistas, Júlio Antão presents in this exhibition a critical and sensitive reflection on the role of art in contemporary society. More than a display of visual works, A.R.T.E. positions itself as a manifesto of resistance and artistic intervention.

According to the curatorial text by António Costa Valente, the artist’s proposal “is a manifesto of resistance and artistic intervention in the face of the paths of globalisation which, rather than democratising art, have imposed a pattern of superficiality and fast consumption.” The curator further adds that A.R.T.E. is a “provocative and poetic” call to attention to what art can and should be: thought, confrontation, creation, and liberation.

Júlio Antão’s artistic trajectory has been marked by a strong connection to territory, identity, and artistic experimentation, developed through a distinctive and multidisciplinary visual language. The artist is a founding member and, until 2023, president of PAS – Peace and Art Society (Portugal), and holds honorary positions in cultural and artistic institutions in the Netherlands, South Korea, Turkey, and Germany. His work has been exhibited in several countries across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

The opening was attended by both the artist and the curator, offering the public direct contact with one of the most promising voices in the visual arts in the Algarve.

Admission is free, and the exhibition may be visited during the regular opening hours of the João Bailote Municipal Gallery, in Albufeira.
