Joaquim Guerra publishes article in the proceedings book Information Systems and Technologies – WorldCIST 2023


Joaquim Guerra, a researcher at CIAC, has published the article “And Now What (Part 1)? Language Teaching: How We Met the ERT Challenge?” in the proceedings book Information Systems and Technologies – WorldCIST 2023 (vol.2).

The article by Joaquim Guerra addresses the teaching of foreign languages in general, highlighting the challenges brought by Covid-19 and successive lockdowns. “The pandemic has necessitated a discursive and methodological change with an urgent integration of ICT in the teaching and learning process. These technologies have allowed the incorporation of applications that ensure immediate contact and, at the same time, are accessible to all teachers and students”, states the abstract of the publication.

Based on a survey that led to the development of a questionnaire directed at teachers, Joaquim Guerra’s study aims to assess the current state of foreign language teaching, particularly after the lockdowns.

The article presents the social, demographic, and academic background of the participants and their perceived difficulties. The author emphasizes that, in summary, the data revealed that “they faced pedagogical and technological difficulties similar to those of other university professors, suggesting that Emergency Remote Teaching highlighted the overall lack of preparation of university professors to deal with emergency situations, as experienced during the Covid-19 lockdowns, regardless of the country and teaching context”.

The publication Information Systems and Technologies – WorldCIST 2023 (vol.2) consists of a selection of articles from the 12th World Conference on Information Systems and Technologies, discussing recent results, innovations, and challenges in modern research on information systems and technologies, covering distinctive topics such as Information and Knowledge Management and Organizational Models and Information Systems.
