L.E.I.A.: CIAC/UMAIA researchers join international audiovisual experimentation project with UNESPAR
In 2026, researchers from the Research Centre in Arts and Communication (CIAC), through the University of Maia (UMAIA) branch, are taking part in L.E.I.A. – Experimental Laboratory for Audiovisual Interlocution, a project developed in collaboration with the State University of Paraná (UNESPAR), Brazil. One of the main highlights of this collaboration will be a group exhibition at Fórum da Maia, from 2 to 25 October 2026.
L.E.I.A. is a teaching, research and artistic training project focused on practices developed at the intersection of cinema, video and visual arts. Established in 2023, it is associated with the Postgraduate Programme in Cinema and Video Arts at the State University of Paraná and is coordinated by artist and lecturer Fábio Jabur de Noronha.
The Laboratory’s methodology is based on an ongoing process of dialogue, experimentation and collective creation, combining discussions, lectures, project supervision and laboratory work. In its first edition, this process resulted in the exhibition Fogo-fátuo e Azul, presented at the State University of Paraná. In its second year, while maintaining the theoretical and practical model centred on group work and reflection, the results were presented at the Cinematheque of Curitiba.
In 2026, the project strengthens its international dimension through collaboration between UNESPAR and the University of Maia. This partnership includes a group exhibition consisting predominantly of audiovisual works, bringing together pieces by former students of both institutions and fostering dialogue between different experiences, languages and contemporary creative practices.
In addition to Fábio Jabur de Noronha, the L.E.I.A. team includes artists, researchers, lecturers and curators Giovanni Comodo, João Miguel Santana and Vitor Droppa, former students of UNESPAR. Representing the University of Maia are Anna Petracca, Ana Carvalho, Fernando Paulino and Tiago Cruz, lecturers at UMAIA and researchers at CIAC. Anna Petracca is also a former student of UNESPAR.
The participation of CIAC/UMAIA strengthens the project’s research dimension and its connection with contemporary audiovisual creative practices, promoting cooperation between researchers, artists, lecturers, students and Portuguese and Brazilian institutions.
The exhibition at Fórum da Maia will provide a new opportunity for the public presentation of the work developed within L.E.I.A., creating a space for experimentation and dialogue between cinema, video and visual arts, while further strengthening the collaboration between CIAC, the University of Maia and the State University of Paraná.
