Mechanical Music Museum hosts NEGENTROPIA: The Last Man in the Wasteland, by Hugo Paquete

Hugo Paquete, CIAC researcher, will once again present the post-techno operatic experience in a post-apocalyptic universe NEGENTROPIA — The Last Man in the Wasteland, this time at the Mechanical Music Museum in Lisbon on 5 October 2024.

NEGENTROPIA: The Last Man in the Wasteland is an opera that transcends traditional conventions, mixing electronic music, noise and technological interaction. The piece offers a unique sensory experience, where baritone Rui Baeta takes on the role of the ‘last man’, accompanied by electronic manipulations by Hugo Paquete and the special participation of musicians such as Cláudio de Pina (synthesisers and programming) and violinists Pedro Carvalho and Ianina Khmelik.

Inspired by the works of composer Jani Christou, the opera recreates and expands the pieces ‘Anaparastasis I: The Baritone’ (1968) and ‘Anaparastasis III: The Pianist’ (1968), incorporating them into a sound and visual meta-dramaturgy that includes CO₂ readings converted into sound. This work deals with themes such as radical ecology, mysticism, death and the search for the limits of the ‘I’ in the face of the abyss, in a technological catharsis that challenges the limits of human survival.

The original show was conceived for the site-specific format of the Porto Planetarium dome and has now been adapted for the Mechanical Music Museum, providing a new experience for the public.

This show is funded by the Directorate-General for the Arts (DGArtes) and the Portuguese Republic / Culture, and has the support of various organisations, including CIAC — Research Center for Arts and Communication.
