Mirian Tavares invited for the third time to deliver a lecture at the Museum of Photography of Fortaleza
Mirian Tavares, Full Professor at the University of Algarve, Vice-Coordinator of CIAC – Research Centre for Arts and Communication, and Director of the PhD Programme in Digital Media-Art, has been invited, for the third time, to deliver a lecture at the Museum of Photography of Fortaleza (Brazil). This new invitation reinforces the scientific and academic collaboration she has been developing with the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) and recognises her research in the fields of digital art and the relationships between art, technology, and contemporary culture.
The lecture is held at the invitation of Professor Fernando Maia da Cunha, from the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), where he teaches and conducts research within the Graduate Programme in Arts (PPGArtes) and the Institute of Culture and Art (ICA). The initiative is part of the programme organised by GAEIC – Group for the Analysis and Study of Contemporary Images, in partnership with the Museum of Photography of Fortaleza, a leading Brazilian cultural institution dedicated to the preservation, research, and dissemination of photography and visual culture.
Entitled Digital Art: A Poorly Told History, the lecture reflects on the need to distinguish art created through computational and digital processes from the mere digitisation of artworks or artistic objects. The presentation will highlight how the history of digital art continues to be marginalised in many contexts within broader narratives of contemporary art history, despite its importance for understanding the profound transformations that digital technologies have introduced into artistic practices.
At a time when everyday experience is shaped by a constant flow of images produced and mediated through digital technologies, the lecture will also examine the role of digital art as a critical and disruptive practice. In contrast to the proliferation of artificial images and algorithmically generated content, it will argue that digital art retains the capacity to question technological systems themselves, making visible their aesthetic, cultural, social, and political implications.
This third invitation marks another step in strengthening the scientific cooperation between the University of Algarve, CIAC, and the Federal University of Ceará, consolidating an international dialogue on research and artistic creation within the context of digital cultures.
The event will take place on 8 August 2026, at 10:00 a.m. (Brazil) / 2:00 p.m. (Portugal), at the Museum of Photography of Fortaleza, Rua Frederico Borges 545, Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil.
