Mirian Tavares presents the Exhibition Rhetoric Lesson: Love and Butcher’s Meat at Associação 289
CIAC researcher and vice-coordinator Mirian Tavares, in collaboration with artist Ricardo Cruzes, presents the exhibition Rhetoric Lesson: Love and Butcher’s Meat, which opens on 11 July 2026 at 6 p.m. at Associação 289 in Faro.
This is the first of a series of three exhibitions that, while sharing the same point of departure, unfold in different contexts and exhibition spaces.
The project Love and Butcher’s Meat reflects on the sociocultural changes that followed 1755, exploring the relationships between language, affect, and materiality. The work refers to the so-called “tax on vice”, introduced by the Marquis of Pombal to support the establishment of secular schools after the expulsion of the Jesuits, highlighting the role of rhetoric in shaping new forms of discourse and social organisation.
By bringing together different historical periods and experiences, Ricardo Cruzes and Mirian Tavares present an artistic proposal that combines personal and historical memories, exploring art as a space for reflection and dialogue across different experiences, times, and meanings.
The exhibition is supported by the Municipality of Faro and CIAC – Research Centre for Arts and Communication.
The exhibition will be open until 22 August at Associação 289, located at Rua Dra. Mariana Amélia Machado Santos, Lote 1, Faro. It can be visited on Thursdays and Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
