Mirian Tavares to moderate meeting with Lídia Jorge in Querença
Researcher and CIAC Vice-Coordinator Mirian Tavares will moderate the conference “Along the Lines of Time” (Pelas linhas do tempo), featuring acclaimed Portuguese writer Lídia Jorge, on 20 June 2026, at 11:45 a.m., in the auditorium of the Manuel Viegas Guerreiro Foundation, in Querença.
The event is part of a special gathering dedicated to the Algarvian author, organised by the Manuel Viegas Guerreiro Foundation as a continuation of the tribute that has been paid to her life and work since the 5th edition of the Querença International Literary Festival (FLIQ), held in September 2025 under the theme The Great Ships of the Earth (Os grandes navios da Terra).
The programme begins at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção and will continue throughout the day with several moments celebrating the writer’s life and literary career. Participation in the morning and afternoon activities is free of charge, while attendance at the commemorative lunch requires prior reservation.
Organised by the Manuel Viegas Guerreiro Foundation, FLIQ has established itself as one of the Algarve’s leading literary events, bringing together writers, researchers, translators, artists and readers around literature, critical thought and the arts. The festival’s fifth edition also marked the Foundation’s 25th anniversary and paid tribute to Lídia Jorge through conferences, exhibitions, readings, concerts and discussions devoted to her work and intellectual legacy. Inspired by the author’s literary universe, the theme The Great Ships of the Earth encouraged reflection on issues such as memory, identity, nature, childhood and utopia.
Widely regarded as one of the most important voices in contemporary Portuguese literature, Lídia Jorge made her literary debut in 1980 with the novel O Dia dos Prodígios (The Day of Wonders). She later consolidated her national and international reputation with works such as A Costa dos Murmúrios (The Murmuring Coast), O Vale da Paixão (The Valley of Passion), O Vento Assobiando nas Gruas (The Wind Whistling in the Cranes), Os Memoráveis (The Memorable Ones) and, more recently, Misericórdia (Mercy). Her work has been translated into more than twenty languages and has received some of the most prestigious literary distinctions in Portugal and abroad, including the FIL Award for Literature in Romance Languages and the Prix Médicis Étranger, awarded in France in 2023. Since 2021, she has also served as a member of Portugal’s Council of State.
Mirian Tavares’ participation in this initiative reinforces CIAC’s presence in spaces dedicated to reflection and debate on literature, culture and contemporary thought, fostering dialogue between academic research and artistic creation.
