Patrícia Dourado participates in the Screenwriting Research Network Conference 2024
CIAC researcher and postdoctoral fellow Patrícia Dourado will travel to Czechia to take part in the Screenwriting Research Network Conference 2024, this year dedicated to the theme “Conversation Beyond Script”. The event will take place at the University of Palacký, in the city of Olomouc.
Patrícia Dourado will present the paper “Towards a Living Fiction: Between Real-Time Composition and Working with Fragments in Leonardo Mouramateus’s Screenwriting Practices – ‘There is a film I carry with me’”, which explores two experimental tools in the screenwriting and production practices of Brazilian filmmaker Leonardo Mouramateus: real-time composition and working with fragments. Real-time composition is influenced by the dialog with the improvisation practices of Portuguese choreographer João Fiadeiro. Working with fragments of scenes, frames and sensations, accumulated over the years, is a method that Mouramateus uses to continue creating, allowing him to make films within the limitations of the industrial system and the economic restrictions in his region. These practices result in a “Living Fiction”, where art and life intertwine.
The study presented by Patrícia Dourado, developed with the co-authorship of Mirian Tavares, is based on the filmmaker’s creative archives, focusing on scripts, drawings, notes, recorded essays and interviews related to films such as “António um dois três” (2017) and “A vida dura dois dias” (2022). The theoretical and methodological basis of the study is Cecilia Salles’ Critical Theory of Creation Processes, developed at the Research Group on Creation Processes at PUC-SP and at CIAC at the University of Algarve.
The Screenwriting Research Network is a research group made up of academics, reflective practitioners and practice-based researchers interested in screenwriting research. The aim is to rethink the screenplay in relation to its stories, theories, values and creative practices. SRN was founded in 2006 and has since held fifteen conferences on four continents.
