PROPS presents a study in a journal integrated into the UNESCO Chair Program on Cyberspace and Cyberculture

The project PROPS – Interactive Narratives Propose Pluralistic Discourse has just published the article “Perceptions about online hate speech in games and gaming communities: results from a survey in Portugal” authored by researchers Susana Costa, Bruno Mendes da Silva, Ana Filipa Martins, and Alexandre Martins in the Journal of Cyberspace Studies (JCSS).

This article stems from a study conducted within the scope of PROPS, in collaboration with schools in the municipalities of Olhão, Loulé, and Lagos. The study is based on a survey involving approximately 200 students from 16 different nationalities, aged between 12 and 18 years.

Through the students’ responses, it was possible to assess some of the characteristics of hate speech that young people encounter during intercommunication in online games and social platforms encompassing this media genre. After an initial phase of data collection and analysis from the survey, some of the results of this study are now presented in the latest edition of JCSS.

The Journal of Cyberspace Studies is an international journal published by the University of Tehran, aiming to contribute to the strengthening of interdisciplinary intersections in cyberspace studies. This publication is part of the UNESCO chair “Cyberspace and Culture: Dual Spacization of the World.”
