Susana Costa takes part in the international seminar “Online Hate Speech”
Susana Costa, CIAC researcher and PhD student in Digital Media Art, is taking part in the International Online Hate Speech Seminar.
The theme can be described in this excerpt written by the organisers: “Hate speech has been present throughout human history, spanning different cultures and eras. Today, it has become more complex due to the impact of digital technologies such as the Internet, social media platforms and Artificial Intelligence (AI). These harmful narratives promote intolerance, destroy the social fabric and threaten the integrity of social minorities, including immigrants, black people and LGBTQI+ individuals.”
“In the digital age, hate speech has become more complex and varied. It spreads rapidly, often influencing behaviour beyond the borders where it originated. Hate is now widespread, interactive and multimedia, available 24/7 and reaching a much wider audience. Haters can remain anonymous, find support from like-minded aggressive individuals, and use various tactics to conceal their violent intentions.”
To contribute to this crucial discussion, LabCom Media Studies Group and Editorial Universidad Icesi (Colombia) are organising three sessions of the International Online Hate Speech Seminar. This online event will be attended by researchers from various countries in the Global South and North. The initiative is part of the promotion of the Online Hate Speech Trilogy, which is available in open access on the publishers’ websites: Disinformation and Polarization in the Algorithmic Society Legal Challenges and Political Strategies in the Post-Truth Era. Methods, Techniques, and AI Solutions in the Age of Hostilities.
On October 31st, at 16:00, Susana Costa will take part in Panel I, with moderator Branco Di Fátima.
The event will be held online, with free access.
