The special issue of the journal Arts on ‘Museums in the Digital Age’ has just been published, with Mirian Tavares as guest editor

On June 4, 2025, the special issue of the international journal Arts, dedicated to “The Role of Museums in the Digital Age,” was published. This issue was academically curated by Mirian Tavares, who served as guest editor.

The issue brings together innovative research on the impact of digital technologies and artificial intelligence on contemporary museums, addressing both the opportunities for expanding access and cultural preservation, as well as the ethical and political challenges emerging from these transformations.

Among the highlights is the article “Museums in Dispute: Artificial Intelligence, Digital Culture, and Critical Curation” by Priscila Arantes. The article critically examines the role of artificial intelligence in museum curation, highlighting the risks of reproducing historical inequalities and proposing the concept of meta-algorithmic curation to address these issues.

The publication underscores the importance of critical reflection on the use of digital technologies in the museological field, emphasizing the museum as a space of contestation over memory, power, and cultural representations.

The deadline for article submissions for this issue was May 30, 2025.
