Between the early 1950s and the mid-seventies, the cinema of Mediterranean Europe experienced a long period of commercial and creative heyday, largely thanks to the international success achieved by popular genres such as peplum, spaghetti western, crime film, and comedy.
Many were the great figures of European cinema who contributed with their talent to raise the quality of the popular genres of Mediterranean Europe. Directors such as Sergio Leone, Jean-Pierre Melville, and Mario Bava, composers such as Ennio Morricone, and stars such as Jean Gabin, Sophia Loren, and Alain Delon, hold today an important place in the history of the 7th Art.
Popular Genres and Transnational Cinema in Mediterranean Europe analyzes the popular cinema of Mediterranean Europe from a historical and transnational perspective, articulating the aesthetic dimension of the films with the cultural, socioeconomic, and industrial context in which they were produced, distributed, and acclaimed by the public.
