Adriana Nogueira will participate in the 15th Celtic Conference in Classics 2024
The School of History, Archaeology and Religion at Cardiff University will host the 15th CCC – Celtic Conference in Classics – 2024 from the 9th to the 12th of July, featuring participation from Adriana Nogueira, a researcher at CIAC.
Adriana Nogueira will participate in the panel New Epic Modes: Screens and Beyond (Reception Studies) with her presentation “The Lusitanian Viriato — An Epic Hero?”. This presentation examines how three Portuguese productions perceive Viriato (a historical figure regarded by the Portuguese as a direct ancestor), describe him, and explore what distinguishes and connects them. It also investigates how these productions understand the concept of “epic” and Viriato as a “hero”: the TV series “Viriato” by Luís Beja, 1990; the film “Non, ou a Vã Glória de Mandar” by Manoel de Oliveira, 1990; and the film “Viriato” by Luís Albuquerque, 2019.
Since 1998, the CCC has alternated between universities in Great Britain, France, and Ireland. In 2017, the conference expanded to Québec, Canada, and in 2019 to Portugal. The event includes over 20 panels covering broad themes in Classics and Ancient History, with around 15 to 20 presentations per panel, allowing for in-depth exploration of fundamental issues in classical studies. Essentially, 20 large-scale conferences on major research topics in Classics take place simultaneously. Scholars are encouraged to switch between panels to shape interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches. Expert panels are open to specialists from other thematic areas, and academics from different national traditions are encouraged to build international academic networks between their home institutions to promote future collaborations. The CCC is democratically and inclusively organised, inviting scholars and students to discuss fundamental issues of Greco-Roman society and culture. The official languages of the conference are English and French.
