“Circuitos: Exhibition of Digital Media Art” opens at the Open University in Lisbon

As part of the Curatorship and Digital Artistic Intervention (CIAD) course, students from the PhD in Digital Media Art at the University of Algarve and the Open University have developed a collaborative curatorial project proposal for the exhibition “Circuitos: Exhibition of Digital Media Art”. The exhibition will be inaugurated on July 16 at 5:30 PM and will run until July 19 at the Open University space, located on Rua Almirante Barroso in Lisbon, as part of the 11th Doctoral Retreat in Digital Media Art.

The “Circuitos” exhibition aims to foster diverse debates and interconnect multiple artefacts, energizing the concept while creating convergences with the exhibition location, participants, and visitors.

As a concept, “Circuitos” emerges as a character in the stories it narrates or that are narrated by others, gaining a voice through the artist-researchers, artefacts, the public, the space, the geographical location, and the various phases of the collaborative curatorial project. Etimologically, “circuitos” (a masculine noun) can be interpreted as the outer limit of a surface or space, contour, perimeter; as a path around something; as an organized trip (e.g., visit to the exhibition); a series of electrical conductors that can be traversed by an electric current. “Circuitos” as a name and concept encompasses a multiplicity of formats, materials, devices, and reflections, which, symbolically or literally, await activation by visitors and other singularities. Like any electrical circuit, the “Circuitos” exhibition comprises various elements with diverse functions, metaphorically reflected in the artist-researchers’ creations and the dialogue established with the various components of an exhibition. This network of connections originates from the figure of a switch, an agent triggering the process of electrical current flow to the different synergies and communications that flow through digital media art.
