CIAC researcher Jorge Carrega is a member of the Scientific Committee of the XVI Symposium “La creación musical en la banda sonora”, organised by the Comisión de trabajo de música y lenguajes audiovisuales of the Spanish Musicology Society (SEDEM).
The theme of the symposium can be described by an excerpt from the presentation: “Adaptations, versions, reworkings and remixes are a constant in audiovisual productions, from ‘silent cinema’ to internet memes. Music shows great versatility in providing these transits between media and genres, contributing in this process to updating audiovisual aesthetics and generating new meanings. Lyric theatre and musical cinema, soundies and television performances, music videos, advertising or video games, etc., establish flows and synergies between these genres that deserve to be analysed. Media convergence and remediation are not new processes or exclusive to the digital age, but have been present, to a greater or lesser degree, throughout the history of audiovisual media, and music has participated as another language in these multimodal and transmedia processes.
Similarly, the audiovisual and music industry has sought to broaden audiences and gain markets through international production and dissemination strategies. This goal has not only internationalised genres, but has also led to co-productions, double versions and adaptations that have been repeated throughout history. These strategies created transnational links between artists, film genres and musical repertoires, especially between Spain, Portugal, Italy and the American continent. From folk musicals to song festivals, from TV series to documentaries, there are many examples in which the music of these audiovisual productions has served to build bridges and establish dialogues between different cultures and territories.
For more than two decades, the meetings held under the name of the International Symposium ‘La creación musical de la banda sonora’ have served as a meeting point for those who approach the role of music in audiovisual language in all its breadth, from different approaches and disciplines. With this vocation, the 16th edition pays special attention to the convergences that occur both between methodologies and in the case studies themselves, with the aim of creating a space for dialogue on the role of music in audiovisual language in different media and at different latitudes throughout history.
Here are some of the main themes of the symposium:
- Methodologies for analysing audiovisual genres.
- Film music in Spain and dialogues with other European and American countries.
- Music and television: programmes, series and other television formats.
- Music and audiovisual advertising, music videos and related formats.
- Music and video games.
- Production, circulation and consumption of music in the digital environment.
- Audiences, participatory culture and music consumption.
- Music teaching and audiovisual language.”
The call for papers is open until January 15th, 2025 and the event will take place between 3 and 5 April 2025 in Áviles (Asturias).
