Proceedings of the Artech 2023 International Conference published on the ACM Digital Library
The ARTECH ’23: Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Digital and Interactive Arts book has been published. This volume brings together the papers presented at the conference held in November 2023, organized by CIAC and the Artech International Association, focusing on the theme “Digital Creation Processes”.
Edited by Lucas Olivero, Pedro Alves da Veiga, António Araújo, Patrícia Dourado, and Bruno Mendes da Silva, CIAC researchers, the proceedings book features significant contributions from CIAC researchers. Regarding Digital Art and Artworks, CIAC’s participation is reflected in the following publications:
“Âmago II: The Creative Process of an Underwater Vietnamese Self-Portrait” by Susana Costa and Bruno Mendes da Silva, focusing on the digital creation process of the video art Âmago II, exploring themes of self-representation, auto-narratives, and cultural symbolism.
“Cinema or the Persistence of Illusion: A video installation between pre and post cinema” by Ana Gavina, presenting a proposal for a video installation combining pre-cinematic works with images generated by Artificial Intelligence.
“The Faro Museum poster collection: Demo of a prototype for a digital exhibit” by Rui d’Orey, Jorge Carrega, Bruno Mendes da Silva, and Alexandre Martins, describing the development of a 3D virtual exhibition in collaboration with the Faro Municipal Museum, aimed at promoting the poster collection of Portuguese scenographer Joaquim António Viegas.
Under the theme of Digital Art Theory, the article “Digital Narratives & Urban Artivist Networks. A Theoretical-methodological Approach” by Isabel Carvalho and Sílvia Viegas explores disciplinary and thematic convergence in digital media art, urban life, and social activism.
Focused on Digital Creation Processes, “Insights from a digital diary: Exploring the Creative Process of the game-installation In[The Hate Booth]” by Susana Costa, Mirian Tavares, Bruno Mendes da Silva, and José Bidarra proposes an approach to the creative gesture, particularly in digital art, and methodologies for accessing the creative process.
Under Digital Performative and Audio-visual Creations, noteworthy publications include:
“Live Cinema: Composing Linear Narratives through Untouchable Interfaces and the Performers’ Body Movements” by Ana Perfeito and Bruno Mendes da Silva, discussing the concept of “live cinema,” a subgenre of digital media art.
“Rejeitorio”: The battle of man against a river: Contextualization and creative process of the second version of the artifact” by Inês Ârgolo, Bruno Mendes da Silva, and Gabriela Borges, contextualizing and discussing the creative process of an interactive video installation about the defense of the São Francisco River in Brazil.
“The Weight of Water: Digital Artefact to blow the whistle on mental health issues in swimming athletes” by Patrick dos Santos and Bruno Mendes da Silva, focusing on the creation process of an interactive video to raise awareness and inspire a change in public perception regarding mental health in high-performance sports, especially in swimming.
“Audiovisual Storytelling on Social Networks: a Digital Media-Art Film Artefact for Socio-Cultural Intervention” by Selma Pereira, Ricardo Alexino Ferreira, and Adérito Fernandes-Marcos, presenting a reflection on audiovisual narratives, focusing on those published/shared on social networks, and discussing their filmic nature, digital media art, and socio-cultural intervention dimension.
“Drawn onto a Skybox: An invitation to collaborative immersive drawing using the Spheri platform” by António Araújo and Lucas Olivero, describing an installation inviting the audience to collaborate in creating immersive drawings that will be instantly visualized.
“Spheri v1: A body tracking artefact to interact with spherical perspective drawings made on-the-fly” by Lucas Olivero, contributing to manually created immersive environments and highlighting potential implications for artists, designers, illustrators, and educators.
“Pátria: Cyberperformance as a pedagogical and artistic practice” by Rosimária Sapucaia, introducing the concept of cyberperformance, the performance “Pátria,” and the CyPeT research project developed at CIAC, which motivated this study.
“Poetics of Instability: Subversion of Gravity through Digital Performative Art” by Clara Trigo, Pedro Alves da Veiga, and Ivani Santana, pointing out the subversion of gravity as a characteristic of the poetics of instability.
