CIAC’s Research Group on Film Studies Working is organizing the 2nd International Colloquium Cinemas of the Mediterranean on April 10th and 11th, that will take place at the University of Algarve.

The second edition of the colloquium aims to promote intercultural dialogue and stimulate partnerships for the investigation of cinema produced by Mediterranean countries from an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing on Italian cinema, with the participation of guests from Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, the United Kingdom, Morocco, and Brazil.

Sir Christopher Frayling, Distinguished Professor of Arts at Lancaster University and Emeritus Professor of Cultural History at the Royal College of Art, will present “Once Upon a Time in Italy” as one of the keynote speakers, a lecture by Sergio Leone’s biographer revisiting and reexamining the film A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and its legacy, sixty years after its release.

This lecture focuses on popular Italian genres of the sixties and seventies in terms of their production system and their ability to explore cultural trends and international networks while maximizing their scarce resources.

The initiative will also feature other invited speakers, including Austin Fisher from Bournemouth University, presenting “Curating Italian horror films in the streaming era”; José Bogalheiro from the Higher School of Theater and Cinema, speaking on “Flashing and metamorphosis: cinema according to Pier Paolo Pasolini”; Hugo Barreira from the Faculty of Arts, University of Porto, who has prepared the lecture “In the sanctuary of materialities: towards new readings of art direction from the Cinecittà collection”; and finally, Jean Montarnal, author and independent researcher presenting “La ‘Qualité française’ through the lens of Julien Duvivier”.

As part of the program, there will also be a thematic panel dedicated to the topic “Cinema, Literature, and Tourism in Croatia”, featuring Sonja Novak and Stephanie Jug from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Osijek (Croatia).

The event will take place on April 10th and 11th, and will be held in Auditorium 1.4 of the Pedagogical Complex of the Penha Campus, University of Algarve, with the support of the Italian Cultural Institute of Lisbon, the Alliance Française Algarve, the Municipality of Faro, and the Union of Parishes of Faro.
