Interview

Susana Costa presents the XVIII CIAC Conference in an interview with RUAfm
The XVIII CIAC Conference was featured on RUAfm in an interview with Susana Costa, researcher and organizer of the event. One of the goals of the initiative is to “discuss the presence and how artificial intelligence is present in communication, culture, and the arts.”
During the interview with RUAfm, Susana Costa mentioned that the theme of these conference is to discuss the opportunities that AI brings to communication, culture, and the arts, as well as the challenges it poses for those studying, researching, and creating in the current world of contemporary art.
“We currently have a broad discussion about how AI’s form operates and the originality of the images and texts that are created. At the University of Algarve, we have various undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs that prepare students precisely for this market of cultural and creative industries”, spotlighted the researcher. She added, “It is very relevant not only for our students and researchers but also for the community to discuss whether AI really has an impact on creation and how these images and texts generated by AI can be considered original and non-human.
Regarding Artificial Intelligence, Susana Costa commented, “It is something that evolves day by day, and it is interesting to analyze and discuss it from various perspectives within the arts, culture, and communication, which are precisely the areas in which we operate at CIAC.”
Concerning the program of the XVIII CIAC Conference, Susana Costa highlighted the presence of Geraint Wiggins, who comes from Queen Mary University of London (UK) and the Association for Computational Creativity. He brings precisely the debate on the opportunities AI brings for the future in terms of creation in the fields of arts and communication.
On a national level, we will hear from Ana Viseu, a researcher who will discuss the influence of data and how they can enhance human skills. From an artistic perspective, Joana Pestana will share her experiences regarding the interaction between her artistic practice and the “more than human.”
“Can the machine replace humans, can the machine only enhance humans, or can the machine only copy humans? This is what we are going to debate, what opportunities and gaps do we have to explore with AI as an ally and not as an enemy,” concluded Susana Costa, the coordinating researcher of the event.
The XVIII CIAC Conference will take place next Friday, March 1, and will be held in Auditorium 1.4 of the Pedagogical Complex of the Penha Campus, at University of Algarve. Admission is free.
