University of Seville researcher hosted by CIAC to conduct a study on audiovisual accessibility
Emanuela Todisco is a visiting researcher at CIAC from 6 July to 4 September 2026, where she is developing a project dedicated to the study of acoustic pareidolia and its potential applications in adapting audiovisual content for people with hearing impairments.
A lecturer in Italian and a researcher in Linguistics and Language Multimodality at the University of Seville, Emanuela Todisco has conducted her scientific work at several European institutions. Her research focuses on the relationship between verbal and non-verbal communicative strategies, particularly the role of gaze, gestures and suprasegmental features in language production and processing, both in spoken and signed languages.
The project explores the use of audiovisual resources in the study of auditory linguistic phenomena, analysing acoustic pareidolia (a phenomenon in which the brain interprets random or ambiguous sounds, such as wind, rain, traffic or household appliances, as words, melodies or familiar voices) and the relationship between sounds and images in the context of cinematic narrative. The research seeks to understand the meaning-making processes constructed by viewers and how these elements can be taken into consideration when adapting audiovisual content for people with hearing impairments.
The study aims to contribute to the development of more appropriate accessibility strategies, taking into account the diversity of elements involved in the audiovisual experience.
