The aim of Sandra Boto’s postdoctoral research is to complete the critical-genetic publication of the ‘Romanceiro’ ballad-style literary works de Almeida Garrett (1799-1854). It began in 2013, after a long preliminary period of study and analysis of all the known testimonies related to this work left behind by the Portuguese romantic poet.

In addition to the printed collections of novels that he published in his lifetime and versions, complete or fragmented, in his plays or prose, Garrett also left us an abundant manuscript legacy (essentially composed of handwritten documents), housed in different documental archives located in Portugal.

Adding the ambitious goals of the publication underway, which aims to provide several levels of reading, to the exponential heterogeneity of Garrett’s ballad-style body of work, the digital medium appears the only viable way to editorially “represent” this work in a hypermedia environment (notwithstanding the known risks of instability associated with digital materiality).

The digital critical edition under construction is thus the end result of a project supported directly by the Foundation for Science and Technology through the granting of an individual postdoctoral scholarship in Literary Studies, in the 2012 invitation for tenders, which is currently in the second three-year period.
