The first edition of the Conference is dedicated to the theme of Theories that live in practices and will take place on October 28th and 29th, 2024, in Faro, at the University of Algarve, at the Penha Campus.
Call for Submissions
In October 2024, artists and researchers gather at the University of Algarve, at the initiative of CIAC – Research Center in Arts and Communication, willing to contemplate Creation Processes across practices, materialities, procedures, and methods, under the theme of Theories that live in practices.
CIAC has intensified studies and actions in the area of Creation Processes, especially since the beginning of the partnership with the Research Group in Creation Processes of PUC-SP (2019), cwith over 30 years of experience dedicated to research in this area. The results of this Portugal-Brazil partnership include the CIAC Creation Processes Collection (2022), the Master’s Degree in Creation Processes at the University of Algarve, and the CIAC Creation Processes Conference (2024).
Thinking about Creation Processes in contemporary times means, among other things, contemplating the “faber” humanity that, in the face of its own incongruities and asymmetries, recreates, fictionalizes, and documents itself in multiple times and spaces. There is much art behind the scenes, in the theatre wings, in the frames and saved versions, in the costumes, in the pigments, in the rolls of paper, in the rearrangement of things, and in bringing people together.
The focus of this first edition is the theories that live in these (so many) practices, aiming to be a door/crack to showcase and experience this fruitful field.
The Conference welcomes abstracts for presentations by artists and researchers on the theme of the edition, Theories that live in practices, and on other suggested central themes, but not limited to:
- Contemporary experimentation
- Theories of artistic creation and their poetics
- Materialities and procedures of artistic creation
- Culture, memory, and archives of creation
- Reception and group creation
- Research methodologies in creation processes
- Transdisciplinarity and creation processes
- Genetic criticism
- Creation and translations
- Creation processes reports
Abstracts should have between 200 and 300 words and be submitted via the Submission Form, through the Conference website, by July 14, 2024.
After the event, speakers are invited to submit the full article, following the CIAC Editions guidelines, for publication in a special volume of the Creation Processes Collection.
The registration is free.

Workshop
Points in View
With Kenia Dias and Wagner de Miranda
Gama Rama Gallery
Rua do Prior, 13, Faro
October 26th
10h
A creative workshop based on the study of movement and its poetic developments. What other ways of being in space can expand the perspectives of the body? How can the same sequence of movement be danced with different versions and qualities of presence? Scenic situations will be individually and collectively investigated based on movements, created images, and transitional articulations of meaning, in order to expand the possibilities of assembling, demolishing, and reinventing dramaturgies.

Workshop
Sensory Images
With Camila Mangueira and Fabrício Fava
Gama Rama Gallery
Rua do Prior, 13, Faro
October 26th
14h
The increasing multiplication of functions, processes, and multimedia image systems demands, more than ever, a critical understanding that considers the image as a complex environment of interconnected languages, practices, and objects. Based on the Metaimage proposal, which aims to expand the idea of an image beyond visual representation, we will explore senses, memory, and play as ways of experimenting with the image as a multimodal element. Through sensory investigation exercises and creative group dialogues, we will discuss concepts, capture image translation processes, and produce possible narratives and propositions of the sensory image.

Through their practices and techniques in painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, and photography, these artists take us to their territory with diverse perspectives, addressing topics such as landscape and urban architecture, local traditions, natural and urban sounds, and the political, social, and environmental concerns of the region.
Guided Tour of the New Headquarters of Associação 289 – Collective Exhibition “Disruptive Deviations”
October 28, 2024 | 7:30 PM
Associação 289 – Cercado da Atalaia
As part of the CIAC International Conference on Creation Processes, Associação 289 is hosting a guided tour of its new headquarters and the Collective Exhibition “Disruptive Deviations,” with the presence of the artists.
The tour, scheduled for Monday, October 28, at 7:30 PM, is one of the conference’s Cultural Activity recommendations, aimed at those interested in exploring the artistic production of the region.
Associação 289 (@289_FARO) was born from the desire of a group of visual artists residing in Algarve to find a space where they could develop their work. What started as a small group of just three or four people quickly grew, consolidating the idea of creating an association.
Initially driven by the search for a new workspace, this effort has evolved into an association that currently comprises 21 members dedicated to enhancing visual arts in the Algarve region.
The association’s new headquarters, recently inaugurated in Cercado da Atalaia, is hosting the collective exhibition “Disruptive Deviations,” which opens on October 28 at 7:30 PM with a guided tour by the artists, in the context of the CIAC International Conference on Creation Processes.

University of Algarve – Auditorium 1.5
Pedagogical Complex of Penha
As part of the CIAC International Conference on Creation Processes, performer Leonardo S. will present a Reading Performance of his letters “Semente” (“Seed”) and “Apetite de Movimento” (“Appetite for Movement”).

Leonardo S.’s Reading Performance will take place on the final day of the event, October 29, at 5:30 PM, in room 1.5 of the Pedagogical Complex of Penha at the University of Algarve, concluding the conference dedicated to the themes of creation.
